Assoc. Prof. Dr. Petar Vodenicharov holds a PhD in General and Comparative Linguistics, with a dissertation titled “The Rhythmic Organization of the Gotse Delchev Dialect” (1994). He began his academic career as an assistant professor (1985), became a senior assistant (1990), and was promoted to associate professor (2001) at South-West University “Neofit Rilski” in Blagoevgrad with the habilitation theses ‘ Language, gender and power’ (1999), Нe lectures on ethnolinguistics, sociolinguistics, and psycholinguistics. He served as a visiting lecturer in Bulgarian language and culture for foreigners at the American University in Bulgaria (1991–1994), and later taught ethnolinguistics at Plovdiv University “Paisii Hilendarski” (1995–1997).
His research focuses on a critical examination of the totalitarian communist Newspeak in the media and the archives of the State Security /the repression of Muslims and Protestant denominations/. He has also studied gender relations in the Balkans, the issues of sexism in media and culture in communist and post-communist Bulgaria. Within the framework of European projects, he explores Bulgarian models of memory, as well as women’s contributions to education, science, and history in the 19th and 20th centuries.
