Negotiating Tradition and Innovation: Medical Pluralism and Healthcare Transformations in the 20th and 21st Centuries
Editors: Kassabova, A., D. Nencheva, Strelec, J.
The issue explores diverse approaches to the history of medicine and health from the 20th to the 21st centuries. The aim is to contribute to the current academic research on health and medicine by analyzing processes of medicalization and de-medicalization in various geographical, temporal and socio-cultural contexts. At the core is the concept of medical pluralism, which, instead of following the dualism between traditional and modern, European and non-European, points to coexistence and interaction of different approaches, treatments, institutions, and objects used by people for healing and maintaining health. This expanded understanding encompasses not only the availability of different healing practices (such as biomedicine, traditional medicine, and alternative therapies) but also how these practices are influenced by various state policies, social dynamics, and cultural contexts.
We welcome contributions from a range of disciplinary perspectives, including the history of medicine, ethnography, medical anthropology, and medical ethics. By integrating these diverse methodologies, this issue seeks to provide a deeper understanding of health-seeking behaviors and their entanglement with wider sociopolitical and historical processes.
We invite scholars to submit original research that engages with these themes.
