BOOK REVIEW
OUTSIDE, INSIDE, IN BETWEEN: RETHINKING THE SOCIALIST SUBJECT
Abstract: This review reads the special issue through the problem of the relationship between human beings and their environments. It proposes a three-part typology distinguishing between environments that shape behaviour from the outside, environments that become internalised through habit and discipline, and environments that are constitutive of cognition itself. By tracing these overlapping modes of subject formation, the essay highlights the broader conceptual contribution of the special issue to debates on socialist modernity, subjectivity, and the making of persons.
Keywords: socialist modernity; environment; subject formation; governmentality; 4E cognition.
